When The Butterflies Flew Away

A novel about the story of Freidl Dicker-Brandeis and the children to whom she taught art in the concentration camp Terezin. Proclaimed by the late Sonia Weitz as "a wonderful addition to Holocaust literature", the book is meant to be an introduction to the Holocaust for younger readers. The title comes from the famous poem written by fourteen year old Pavel Friedman under Brandeis' teaching "The Last Butterfly."  Of the fifteen thousand children who passed through the gates of Terezin, less than one hundred survived the Holocaust, but thanks to Brandeis, their artwork and writings did. This novel is a tribute to them.
